IT Pieces built an online design tool that materializes user data. Individualized, made to order garments that are distinctively suitable for daily use are being produced by means of several automation processes.
Online user behavior directly influences the appearance of the knitted garment and thus creates an interaction between the individual's online-activity and the independent design tool.
The first IT Piece is based on a users' Facebook stream. The data is analyzed by an AI algorithm and then translated into selected song lines from the musician Jaakko Eino Kalevi. The user can choose between five possible sentences that are automatically knitted into a special garment designed by Flora Miranda.
The configurator is based on fashion photographs and incorporates a 3D overlay realized in WebGL using ThreeJS. Generated textures are applied onto a 3D mesh to visualize custom contents.
The process of fetching and analyzing data is visualized in a realtime 3D animation made with ThreeJS.
The customization tool generates bitmaps that are then fed into an automated knitting process.
Being a collaborative work of many people the project is in constant flux. In the early production phase we tested various different approaches on logic and look of the customization tool.
Building a completely generated 3D visualization of garments helped us to find our way to the hybrid solution we ended up with: images with a 3D overlay.
