“Anatomy Of Autonomy” is a data-reactive visualisation of the relationship between humans and AI.
What is this new entity, AI, that enters our lives?
With AI development, we humans confront ourselves with basic existential and ethical questions. We dissect what it means to be human in order to create AIs and provide them a space in our lives. We learn about learning. Yet, the consumers and users of AI’s are often deprived of such deep and fundamental analysis, receiving speed, convenience and more in return.
Anatomy of Autonomy Visualisation
The digital assistant “Kate” is designed by KBC to assist customers, resolve problems and ease their lives in a proactive way where possible. The more autonomy “Kate” gains, the better. In achieving a high score, “Kate” is not only evaluated based on its ability to resolve customer queries, but primarily on its capacity to comprehend the questions and issues.

The artwork illustrates the interplay between these two entities, as they traverse through the landscape of information, drawn closer or pushed apart based on “Kate”s current learning state. Every quarter, a new generative animation is produced, informed by the “Kate Autonomy %” as calculated by KBC.
“Anatomy Of Autonomy” is crafted from the perspective of fashion design, manifesting two entities whose forms can be directly translated into textiles and garments. The abstract patterns are actualised using traditional machine embroidery techniques.
